Université Versailles St Quentin was created in 1991 as one of the four new, public universities. Over 19,000 students are taught such subjects as exact sciences, social sciences, political sciences, engineering, technology and medicine.
The university also provides courses concerning the relations between economy, ethics, natural environment and sustainable development. Because of its multidisciplinary nature (200 different trainings), the university is active in many fields, including international, double or delocalized degrees in communication, law, economy, data processing, management, medicine and physics. Research activities at the university are done in 35 laboratories, 12 of which are affiliated with the French National Centre for Scientific Research. They are grouped in six departments and have a total of nearly 950 researchers and 715 PhD students.
