The Józef Mehoffer House is a museum dedicated to one of the most esteemed Polish modernist painters. It is located in the neoclassical Palace under the Cones where the artist lived for many years. The collection includes his paintings, drawings, prints as well as personal items, furniture and various keepsakes. The house has a beautiful garden that is open to visitors.
Mehoffer bought the house in 1932. In 1963, his son Zbigniew proposed that a museum be opened here. Following Zbigniew’s death in 1986, the house was taken over by the National Museum in Krakow and carefully renovated to restore the way it looked during Mehoffer’s lifetime.
Józef Mehoffer (1869-1946) was one of the most revered Polish artists of his time. His symbolist, stylised paintings, prints and drawings, as well as stained glass, brought him well-earned fame and recognition. He also produced set designs for theatre, furniture designs, book covers, ornaments and posters.
