The Riverbank Arena is a stadium in East London. It was built with two venues for the field hockey competition at this year’s Games with capacities of 15,000 and 5,000. After the Games, the venue will be scaled down to a 5,000 seat arena and a training pitch and moved north to Eton Manor. It will host the 2015 European Hockey Championships.
Field hockey at the 2012 Games is scheduled to be held from 29 July to 11 August 2012 at the Riverbank Arena. Twelve teams for each event, both men’s and women’s, will take part in the tournaments. While UK hockey is organised by separate bodies for each of the home nations, in the Games the UK is required to enter a combined team.
The twelve teams in the tournament are divided into two pools of six teams with each team initially playing round-robin games within their pool. Following the completion of the round-robin, the top two teams from each pool advance to the semi-finals. All other teams play classification matches to determine the final tournament rankings. The two winners of the semi-finals meet for the gold medal match, while the semi-final losers play in the bronze medal match.
