The original store was founded in 1895 by Théophile Bader and his cousin Alphonse Kahn and sold clothing. In 1912, having bought adjoining building and thus increased the shop floor, Bader commissioned a new, impressive building, with a glass and steel dome and Art Nouveau staircases.
