The spot is a system of caves that served as a hospital several years ago and is now one of the greatest tourist attractions of Budapest. The medical unit was operating here in times of World War II and the Revolution of 1956. The caves, located at the foot of the Castle Hill, hold a nuclear bunker from the Cold War era. The whole complex was classified until the first decade of the 21st century.
Nowadays, the 10-kilometre cave system is open to the public as a museum. You can see the actual equipment of the facilities operating inside the caves. The museum provides guided tours in Hungarian and English, departing every hour. The average temperature inside is about 15°C (59 degrees Fahrenheit) during summer so be sure to dress accordingly.
