Auditorio Nacional (the National Auditorium), an entertainment centre, organises shows which are considered to be among the top ones in the world. These include, among others, music concerts, art exhibitions, theatre performances and dance shows. Since its construction in 1952, the centre has hosted gymnastics events at the 1968 Summer Olympics, Miss Universe Pageants and many others.
The centre was originally constructed as a venue for volleyball and basketball matches of the 1954 Central American and Caribbean Games. In 1958 it housed the performances of the San Francisco Ballet and New York Philharmonic. Since the 1970s it has been used primarily for international music, song, dance and film festivals, fairs and exhibitions.
In May 2007, the American magazine Pollstar (a leading trade magazine concerning concert tours) ranked Auditorio National as the best concert venue in the world. In November 2007, the venue also won the Billboard Touring Awards for best concert venue in the world. Interestingly, the site houses the largest pipe organ in Latin America.
