The New Main Street was made of 4 streets (Kecskeméti utca, Petőfi Sándor utca, Október 6. utca, and Honvéd utca) and 4 squares (Egyetem tér, Ferenciek tere, Erzsébe tér, and Szabadság tér), stretching for about 3 kilometres. The area is pedestrian-friendly but it doesn’t mean that cars are totally banned.
The first stage of the project ended in 2010 with the construction of a fountain that reacts to movement. It is located on the south side of the Szabadság Square. There is another, albeit less spectacular Fountain of the Nereids Statue (Nereidák Kútja) on the Ferenciek Square.
Among several shops, cafés and restaurants you can also find a Franciscan church with a Baroque altar, the University Church (also of Baroque origin) and the remains of Pest’s Mediaeval City Wall.
