The Village in London, located in the park and within walking distance of the venues, will provide accommodation for all athletes and team officials (17,320 people altogether) and includes shops, restaurants, medical, media and leisure facilities, as well as large areas of open space.
Since 1932 an Olympic Village has been a traditional accommodation place built for the Games. Besides comfortable accommodation and modern communications facilities (Internet access and wireless networking), the London Village also includes a ‘Village Plaza’, where athletes can meet friends and family. The village comprises 11 residential plots, each made up of five to seven blocks constructed around communal squares and courtyards, with water features indicating the closeness of the River Lea. After the Games the village will be transformed into a new residential area, with 2,818 new homes, including 1,379 affordable homes and houses for sale and rent. The new residential quarter will be known as East Village.
