General Information

It was a military prison in use between 1851 and 1947. Its construction began in 1847. The prison consisted of 200 solitary confinement cells. From 1940 to 1944, it was used to house political prisoners by the German occupation army. Famous detainees include Adolphe Feder, Kurt Gerstein, and Henri Honoré d’Estienne d’Orves.
