Bem József Square, along with its namesake statue commemorates General Józef Bem, a national hero of Poland and Hungary. It is also one of the symbols of the Hungarian Revolution of 1956. On October 23 that year, thousands of Hungarians organised a manifestation and made their way towards the Parliament Building and the national radio headquarters. These events began the uprising against the communist government.
