The construction of Arena Colliseo was commissioned by the famous prompter known as “father of Lucha libre”, Salvador Lutteroth, as a new venue for Empressa Mexicana de Lucha Libre (today’s Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre – Worldwide Wrestling Council). Originally it was meant to replace Arena México. Now it is one of the two main venues in Mexico City for Lucha libre events.
Arena Coliseo is smaller and less iconic than Arena México, but still it enjoys a great deal of popularity. Each week the place is taken over by vibrant atmosphere and lively sport emotions. There are usually three or four matches, which then build up to formidable match-ups.
Arena Coliseo opened in 1943 and for the next ten years it was the main venue for Lutteroth’s promotion Empressa Mexicana de Lucha Libre (EMLL), until it became too small for the crowds EMLL’s shows were attracting. At that time, the famous Arena México (then Arena Model) served as the location for EMLL’s wrestling school.
The CMLL Arena Coliseo Tag Team Championship is a professional wrestling Tag team championship promoted by CMLL since 2000. It is considered a secondary championship, after the CMLL World Tag Team Championship. As the name indicates, the championship is only defended in Arena Coliseo.
Being a professional wrestling championship, the competition is not won legitimately – it is instead won via a scripted ending to a match or awarded to a wrestler because of a storyline. The Arena Coliseo Tag Team Championship was originally created in the late 1960s or early 1970s by Empressa Mexicana de Lucha Libre (EMLL; who would change their name to CMLL around 1990) as a secondary title to the Mexican National Tag Team Championship. The Championship was brought back in 2000, specifically to help showcase younger wrestling talents as they work on a local level before “graduating” to working full time for the main CMLL roster.
